All Saints Blog Week of April 10th, 2017

Holy Week
As Catholics, our most important liturgical season continues with the celebration of Holy Week this week.  We began this observance this past weekend with Palm Sunday, retelling the story of Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem, including his passion and death.  We will celebrate this very important point in our liturgical season with liturgies this Thursday for all students and staff.  

Travelling Student Groups
All Saints is currently supporting a number of opportunities for students outside of our city (and Country!).  Our Show Choir was in Toronto this weekend competing in a show in that city.  We currently have a large contingent of staff and students in France participating in the Vimy Ridge observance (pictured here, outside Buckingham Palace).  I am hoping some of our community were able to watch the ceremony on TV this past Sunday.  In addition, we have a group visiting Costa Rica on a learning excursion, exploring the unique conditions related to this setting.  I am anxious to share the experiences of these groups in an upcoming blog.

Student Support Initiative in the Community
A Kanata Major Pee Wee AA Blazers Hockey team is currently involved with the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup.  This is an opportunity to raise money for their selected charity, support for Jonathan Pitre, better known as The Butterfly Child. The contest would allow the team to support Jonathan and his mother Tina Boileau and DEBRA, the organization which researches Jonathan's EB disease.  If the team wins this contest, Chevrolet will donate an additional $15,000 to DEBRA on behalf of the Blazers and Rogers Sportsnet will host a party which will be broadcast live at the Bell Sensplex.
How can you help??
Students are encouraged to vote every day at the following link: http://www.chevrolet.ca/hockey/power-of-play.html, simply scroll down to Kanata Blazers and vote. You are encouraged to vote once a school day until April 20th when voting closes. We have the potential to get several thousand votes just by this process
You can vote once every 24 hours. The key is to vote and share daily.
ALSO, we are asking students to share the story on Instagram and Facebook asking their friends to vote.

Important update for students - Voters’ List
Starting July 2017, 16 and 17 year olds who are Canadian citizens and reside in Ontario will be able to add themselves to a provisional register which will automatically add them to the Voter’s List when they turn 18. We will be reaching out to schools with new materials next fall to share this information with their students in hopes they will count themselves in. We would like to engage the next generation of voters in the electoral process early to give them more time to get on the register. The next general election in Ontario is scheduled for June 2018. By registering, 16 and 17 year olds will receive updates about the 2018 General Election as well as information about jobs for youth during elections.

All Saints Blog Week of March 27th, 2017

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test
Our Grade 10 students will be writing the 2017 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) this Thursday, March 30th.  Students originally had an opportunity to write the test in October, however, technical difficulties prevented the majority of students in Ontario from completing the assessment.  We have used this additional time to review concepts, outline test structure and highlight previous tests for student support.


Student Grade Level Assemblies regarding Opioid use
As part of our ongoing effort to share information from Ottawa Public Health, the Ottawa Police Service and our partnership with Rideauwood Addictions Services, we delivered grade level assemblies to our students this past week.   Jessica Whelan, our Rideauwood Counsellor and Const. Cindy Cybulski, our School Resource Officer collaborated with our student services counsellors on the presentations that outlined important information, as well as clarifying the roles that each of these individuals play.  The presentations highlighted awareness around illicit opioid and fentanyl use, warning signs of those who may be using, and what to do in emergencies.  We will continue to bring up to date information to our students, parents and staff.

Event for Parents regarding Cyberbullying              
The Ottawa Bullying Prevention Coalition in partnership with Ottawa Public Health and Ottawa Police Service will be hosting an event for parents on cyberbullying. The event will bring together key partners across sectors including mental health experts, police and research to facilitate a conversion on cyberbullying and building a more supportive and safe community for all those impacted.  The session will take place on Thursday, March 30th, from 6:30pm to 9:00 pm at Ben Franklin Place, 101 Centrepointe, Ottawa ON

All Saints Student - Provincial Champ!             
Sebastian Chavez, Student Trustee and All Saints High School student, recently won 1st place at the DECA Provincial Competition in Toronto. Over 7500 students from across Ontario came together to compete in a variety of business-based events. Sebastian was the only one to receive a perfect score. Next, he’ll be competing in the International Career Development Conference, DECA’s international competition, in Anaheim, California from April 24 - May 1. Congratulations, Sebastian, and best of luck.

Rescheduled Student and Staff Information regarding Opioid use
Fact sheets regarding illicit opioid use were shared with staff, students and sent home for parent review prior to the March Break.  This is part of our ongoing effort to share information from Ottawa Public Health, the Ottawa Police Service and our partnership with Rideauwood Addictions Services with our staff, students and parent community.  Due to our inclement weather day on March 7th, we have rescheduled our grade/panel assemblies to this Tuesday, March 21st.  Our Rideauwood Counsellor and our School Resource Officer are collaborating on the presentations that will outline important information, as well as clarifying the roles that each of these individuals play.  These professionals are also presenting up to date information to our staff this week at our monthly meeting.  If parents have questions, we would encourage you to contact the school.

Junior Achievement Volunteers

Notice of Parent Information Meeting              
The Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB), in conjunction with Ottawa Public Health (OPH), is hosting a public information session aimed at parents to talk about counterfeit drugs found in Ottawa, overdose response, overdose prevention and substance abuse education in our schools.
Staff from Rideauwood Addiction and Family Counselling, Ottawa Police Services, OPH and other community partners will be represented.
When: Monday, April 3rd -- Parent information session -- 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.- open to the public

Special Education and Your Child:  Workshops for Parents of Children with Special Needs

OCSB Special Education and Student Services, in partnership with the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) PIC and CSPA, present an evening of workshops directed to families of children with special needs.  The 4 workshops will be offered twice.  Participants will be able to attend two sessions of their choice

Assistive Technology
Join us for a hands-on exploration of “Read & Write” and Google Suite. You will have an opportunity to experience first-hand what it is like to use these tools to access the curriculum just as our students do.

Positive Advocacy
Learn tips to help you positively advocate for your child with special needs during education setting meetings. There will be an opportunity for parents to make suggestions as to how OCSB school staff can help support their concerns.

Mental Health Supports at the OCSB
Who can you approach for help when your child is experiencing mental health issues? Come and learn about the mental health resources available at the board and in the community to support students with mental health challenges.

On My Way - Transitions
Effective transitions planning allows for students to be successful as they move through their day, activities or settings. Come and learn how we support successful transitions at all different points for students - prior to the start of school, throughout a student's daily schedule, from grade to grade, and when moving from one school to another.

All Saints Blog Week of March 6th, 2017

School Council Funding Meeting
The All Saints School Council met this past week to allocate funds to some of the initiatives planned for the second half of this school year. Some of the initiatives include our school greening and recycling group, props and costume storage options for our 7&8 drama room, funding for our new community garden and support for our robotics and leadership groups.  We thank the council for taking the time to review the applications from our various groups.

The All Saints production of “Annie”
Congratulations to Ms. Pasini and her large student contingent on the production of “Annie”.  The troupe presented to a huge group of elementary students this past Thursday with shows on Friday night and Sunday afternoon.  The group did a fantastic job, and the show was complemented by some great singing and a unique set.  





Multicultural Fair
We appreciate the many students who contributed to our Cultural Fair this past Friday.  Students created displays including cultural icons, information, symbols and some great snacks.  There was information regarding the Philippines, Ukraine, Great Britain, Ireland, and Poland among other countries.  There was a great opportunity for students to reflect on the idea of cultural identity, which was the key to getting a ticket to the many culturally relevant snacks!




French Speech Competition
Congratulations to all our student candidates who delivered an amazing speech at our school's French Speech Competition this past week!  Special Congratulations to Erika Hanner, Andrea Avramescu, and Laureene Tynski who placed first in the Junior Immersion and French First language category.  As well, congratulations to Zachary Fuller who placed first in the Senior Core French category  and to Nico Castro and Monica Glavin who placed first in the Senior Immersion category. Well done!
The first place winners will move on to the Board Wide Competition on March 23, 2017.  Bon succès!!!
