All Saints Blog Week of April 10th, 2017

Holy Week
As Catholics, our most important liturgical season continues with the celebration of Holy Week this week.  We began this observance this past weekend with Palm Sunday, retelling the story of Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem, including his passion and death.  We will celebrate this very important point in our liturgical season with liturgies this Thursday for all students and staff.

Travelling Student Groups
All Saints is currently supporting a number of opportunities for students outside of our city (and Country!).  Our Show Choir was in Toronto this weekend competing in a show in that city.  We currently have a large contingent of staff and students in France participating in the Vimy Ridge observance (pictured here, outside Buckingham Palace).  I am hoping some of our community were able to watch the ceremony on TV this past Sunday.  In addition, we have a group visiting Costa Rica on a learning excursion, exploring the unique conditions related to this setting.  I am anxious to share the experiences of these groups in an upcoming blog.

Student Support Initiative in the Community
A Kanata Major Pee Wee AA Blazers Hockey team is currently involved with the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup.  This is an opportunity to raise money for their selected charity, support for Jonathan Pitre, better known as The Butterfly Child. The contest would allow the team to support Jonathan and his mother Tina Boileau and DEBRA, the organization which researches Jonathan's EB disease.  If the team wins this contest, Chevrolet will donate an additional $15,000 to DEBRA on behalf of the Blazers and Rogers Sportsnet will host a party which will be broadcast live at the Bell Sensplex.
How can you help??
Students are encouraged to vote every day at the following link: http://www.chevrolet.ca/hockey/power-of-play.html, simply scroll down to Kanata Blazers and vote. You are encouraged to vote once a school day until April 20th when voting closes. We have the potential to get several thousand votes just by this process
You can vote once every 24 hours. The key is to vote and share daily.
ALSO, we are asking students to share the story on Instagram and Facebook asking their friends to vote.

Important update for students - Voters’ List
Starting July 2017, 16 and 17 year olds who are Canadian citizens and reside in Ontario will be able to add themselves to a provisional register which will automatically add them to the Voter’s List when they turn 18. We will be reaching out to schools with new materials next fall to share this information with their students in hopes they will count themselves in. We would like to engage the next generation of voters in the electoral process early to give them more time to get on the register. The next general election in Ontario is scheduled for June 2018. By registering, 16 and 17 year olds will receive updates about the 2018 General Election as well as information about jobs for youth during elections.
