Palm Sunday and Holy Week
Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified.
Palm Sunday is known as such because the faithful will often receive palm fronds which they use to participate in the reenactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice for people of great respect. Palm branches are widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, hence their preferred use on Palm Sunday. The use of a donkey instead of a horse is highly symbolic, it represents the humble arrival of someone in peace, as opposed to arriving on a steed in war. As we begin our journey through Holy Week, I wish you the opportunity for reflection and a Happy Easter next weekend.
40 Hours of Community Service
Since 1999, the Ministry of Education has required all students to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities as part of the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) (As stated in Ontario Secondary Schools, Grades 9 to 12: Program and Diploma Requirements, 1999). The purpose of the community involvement requirement is to encourage students to develop awareness and understanding of civic responsibility and of the role they can play and the contributions they can make in supporting and strengthening their communities. The Ottawa Catholic School Board has always encouraged this community service to take place in the Parish, School, or wider community. There is a list on the back of the Community Service form that all students complete that highlights many of the eligible activities that students may complete to fulfill this graduation requirement. When the expectation around community service was introduced by the Ministry of Education, they developed a list of activities that may not be chosen as community involvement activities and that are therefore ineligible activities. Included as part of that list of those expectations outlined by the Ministry is an activity “that would normally be performed for wages by a person in the workplace”. As your son/daughter works toward this graduation activity, we would encourage them to review the list of accepted activities to ensure they are meeting the proper requirements. You will find a link (below) to the All Saints community service hours form, with a list of appropriate activities on page 2. 7&8 Rethink Hate Group - Fundraising Bake Sale
The Rethink Hate club focuses on matters such as bullying and homophobia that take place within our All Saints and Ottawa community. Our goal is to raise awareness about said issues, locally and globally. We are student-led and have about 20 members in total. We hope that you can make it down to the bake sale to support a great cause and enjoy some delicious treats. (Chloe Fodell 8-02)
7&8 Basketball Buy-In for Charity
This Thursday marks our annual 7&8 Basketball Buy-In for Charity. This is an event that has been running for many years, and was initiated by Mr. Podgorski to support Myeloma Cancer Research at the Ottawa General Hospital. We encourage our students to contribute to the charity which allows them entrance to the basketball game where All Saints will play St. Joseph School. We appreciate our student and staff support to date and would encourage families to make use of the online donation opportunity through school cash online. Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.
In SCREENAGERS, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
Our All Saints School Council has sponsored a screening of “Screenagers” to take place on May 9th at the school. There is no cost to this event, and further information regarding the showtime will be provided shortly. We invite parents and students to join us for this great opportunity!
Councillor Wilkinson’s Community Recognition Award
Councillor Wilkinson’s Community Recognition Award Ceremony is fast approaching, taking place on Tuesday April 24, from 7:00-9:00pm at the Mlacak Centre. The purpose of the ceremony is to recognize key individuals who have positively impacted the Kanata North Community through their volunteer efforts and contributions.
Four awards are given out at the ceremony under the following categories:
-Citizen of the Year
-Senior Citizen of the Year (65 years or older)
-Youth Citizen of the year (18 years or younger)
-Organization of the Year

Diefenbooker Race
The 22nd annual Diefenbooker Race will take place on Saturday May 5, 2018. The funds raised support organizations in West Carleton that promote literacy, encourage physical activity or personal wellness. The Diefenbooker promotes community fun, as well as serious racing.There are events for all ages including:
5 and 10 km running races,
5 km walk,
5, 18 and 33 km cycle tours, youth events, including:
a 1 km running race for 12 years old and under,
a "Loonie Loop" short races for 2 to 6 yrs old.
The organizers are offering an opportunity for funds to schools that our Carp youth attend. Many of our youth go to All Saints High School. The Diefenbooker raises money to support literacy. This year we are excited to announce a new program. A trophy and cash prize of $2000. will be awarded to the school that has the largest percentage of its’ population participate in the Diefenbooker (whether it be walking, running, cycling, or volunteering)
Anxiety in School-Aged Children with Dr. Jean Clinton
Both parents and teachers are expressing increased concern about the number of children exhibiting anxiety. This talk will explore what some of the causes may be and some strategies for helping.
