All Saints Blog Week of February 25th, 2019

ASH Naturalists Club

On February 19th, the ASH Naturalists after school club welcomed Devon Henderson, a self-taught expert in the field of entomology. Ms. Henderson, who has nurtured an avid interest in bugs and anything bug-related for as long as she can remember, brought along some fascinating and well-preserved specimens from around the world. Students were able to see up close a giant beetle from French Guiana as well as beautiful iridescent green, blue and purple beetles. Ms. Henderson shared an interesting fact with the Naturalists Club: an innovative and insect-obsessed Flemish artist took the unusual step of glueing 1.6 million gleaming beetle shells to the ceiling of the Belgian royal palace! The project took four months to complete with 30 of the artist’s assistants painstakingly glueing each of the delicate shells to the palace ceiling. The jewel-like beetles, which appear abundantly in India, Thailand, and Vietnam are considered pests and sometimes eaten, however their beautiful shells are discarded. Ms. Henderson also dispelled several myths related to many types of insects, including wasps, moths, and butterflies. Ms. Henderson’s presentation was informative for students and teachers alike. The teachers running ASH Naturalists are from L to R: Mr. Sutcliffe, Mme MacKinnon, Mme McNelles and Mr. Breton. We look forward to our next activity which will be outdoors in March!
All Saints HOPE Team (Helping Out People Everywhere)
The HOPE (Helping Out People Everywhere) Team has partnered with Carty House, which is a home located near the University of Ottawa, for women who are refugees primarily from Africa. Carty House is the first home for these brave women who come to Canada alone for various reasons seeking safety and a new start. They have asked us specifically to provide cleaning supplies which helps reduce their operating costs so that they may provide the women the most important supports that they need. Items most in need include:
- Bathroom and kitchen cleaning products
- Lysol wipes or spray
- Air freshener
- Rubber gloves
- Toilet paper or paper towels
- Laundry soap
- Hand soap or dish soap
- SOS pads
We are running our cleaning supply drive next week, February 25 - March 1, which is serving as our Lenten outreach this year. We will also gladly accept loonies and toonies which will be donated to Carty House. The HOPE Team is excited to be able to deliver these items directly to Carty House in the beginning of April. More information about Carty House and how they help these women in need is available through their website: http://cartyhouse.org/refugee/what-kinds-of-services-to-the-residents-receive/

University of Ottawa Partnership - Maker Mobile Team
The University of Ottawa's Maker Mobile team from the Faculty of Engineering visited grade 7 Science students on Monday, February 11th. Students from Ms. McNelles's class participated in an interactive workshop on 3D printing to create their own 3D model using Tinkercad, a user-friendly 3D modeling software. Students from Mr. Robinson's class learned basic coding concepts and created a game using a Mirco:bit board. A Micro:bit is a small board that has a micro-processor, accelerometer, sensors, a display of 25 LEDs and two programmable buttons. Micro:bits are now used in education to encourage young people to get actively involved in writing software and building new things. The aim of Ottawa U's Maker Mobile team is to encourage creativity, problem-solving skills, and interest in technology. We hope to have Maker Mobile back again for other grade 7 & 8 classes in the late spring!

CAMH - Ontario Student Drug Use Survey
Randomly selected Gr. 7-12 classes will be completing the Ontario Student Drug Use Health Survey (OSDUHS) on either Feb. 26th or Feb. 28th. Every two years, this anonymous voluntary student survey is conducted to serve as a resource for public health monitoring. We participate in this survey to help gather this valuable information. We do not receive any school specific information, but the overall information is valuable to understand the students’ tendencies in Ontario and the results from this survey are shared with us.
Students who are in the classes that have been selected to complete this survey received a parent consent form on Tues. Feb. 12th. Students must return the parent consent form signed by their parent by Feb. 21st, in order to participate in this survey.
We encourage as many students as possible to participate in this survey. Thank you for your assistance and support with this. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact: Mrs. M. J. Gillier-Symes, Vice Principal.

All Saints Blog Week of February 4th, 2019

Black History Month
Every February, Canadians are invited to honour the legacy of Black Canadians past and present. For 2019, the theme of the Government of Canada's Black History Month campaign is Black Canadian Youth: Boundless, Rooted and Proud.

See events happening in our community: Black History Ottawa

In addition: The Michaƫlle Jean Foundation (FMJF), in collaboration with the Canadian Black Federation (CNF) and the Somali Family Service Center, invites hundreds of Black community representatives from across Canada, local and national organizations and the general public at the Second Black Canadians Summit to celebrate Black History Month and mark the UN's International Decade for People of African Descent (2014-2024) . The event is part of a larger gathering in Ottawa, titled 4 Days, 4 Nights: Tracing Our Future - Face to Face with Parliamentarians. This mobilization will enable Black communities to share the major challenges that they face in order to stimulate a national dialogue on the identified emergencies and the solutions to be undertaken for greater social cohesion in Canada, an inclusive, fair and inclusive development.
