Screenagers Movie - Presented by All Saints School Council

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.  Our All Saints School Council has sponsored a screening of “Screenagers” to take place on May 9th at the school. There is no cost to this event, and further information regarding the showtime will be provided shortly. We invite parents and students to join us for this great opportunity!

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test
Grade 10 students will be writing the online OSSLT literacy test this Tuesday, April 10th. All Saints staff have been working on preparation activities for several weeks. Parents are encouraged to review the information on the Ministry website with their students ahead of the test.
Board Tipi at All Saints
From April 3rd to the 13th, All Saints has been privileged to be able to host our Board’s Tipi in our atrium area. The tipi symbolizes and celebrates all First Nations of Canada. It is set up in the spirit of friendship and ongoing reconciliation. It represents the ongoing process of healing and the restoration of respectful and honourable relationships between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples of this land.

During the period that the tipi is at our school, individual students, staff and classes have been invited to enter it at any time the door is open. It will also be open during high school lunch and will be supervised by Sonja Koostachin, a First Nations student. Inside the tipi is an exhibition of art and text created by Mr. Mastersmith’s grade nine Art students that explains the significance of the tipi and provides insight into the history and culture of the tribes of the plains. Ms. Beaupre and Ms. Gloade's classes have collaborated to create a website that also provides information regarding the significance of this symbol. (https://sites.google.com/ocsb.ca/ocsbtipi/ocsb-tipi ). There will be an exhibition of traditional and contemporary First Nations dance next Thursday, April 12th, in the afternoon to close the tipi exhibition.

Some considerations regarding this cultural symbol :

  • Not all First Nations lived in teepees, only the tribes of the plains.
  • The traditional Algonquin people of this region lived in wigwams that were stick and birch bark covered dwellings.
  • Teepees were portable homes that could be easily moved to follow the migration of the buffalo across the prairies.
  • Traditional teepees were covered with buffalo hides. The poles used to support the structure were precious due to the lack of trees on the plains.
  • The floor of the teepee would be also covered with skins and there would be a fire in the center for warmth and cooking. The smoke would vent from a hole at the top of the teepee.
  • The door typically faced east to honour the rising sun and block harsh winds from the north.
  • On our medicine wheel carpet inside the tipi, are marked the four sacred directions ( Yellow - East, Black - West, Red- South and White- North). Each colour also represents a season and stage of life. On top of the coloured sections are the four sacred Medicines.

Richcraft Kanata Race Day 2018

Registration is now open for the 9th Annual Richcraft Kanata Race Day 2018. This year Race Day will be held on Sunday June 10, 2018. This race features a 10K, 5K, 1K and 200m Tot Trot. Both the 10 and 5K are timed races and the cost for students is $20. All proceeds support the enhancement of the Richcraft Recreation Complex-Kanata and its programming. While the RRCK is fully built and operating, we are still in need of fund raising dollars to meet our financial commitments to this facility. Also, programming in the wooded March Highlands surrounding the facility is offered through a unique Junior Ranger program initiated by Councillor Marianne Wilkinson.

All Saints Blog Week of April 3rd, 2018

Happy Easter!
I would like to wish our entire All Saints community a very happy Easter season as you celebrate over the next several weeks. Our celebration of Easter arrives after a long process of contemplation through Lent. I would like to share two short reflections on that transition from our Lenten observance to our celebration of Easter:
We need to remember Easter in our Good Fridays: Easter reminds us that every Good Friday in our lives will have an Easter Sunday and that Jesus will let us share the power of His Resurrection. Each time we display our love of others, we share in the Resurrection. Each time we face a betrayal of trust, we share in the Resurrection of Jesus. Each time we fail in our attempts to ward off temptations – but keep on trying to overcome them – we share in the Resurrection. Each time we continue to hope – even when our hope seems unanswered – we share in the power of Jesus’ Resurrection. In short, the message of Easter is that nothing can destroy us – not pain, sin, rejection or death – because Christ has conquered all these, and we too can conquer them if we put our Faith in Him. Fr. Antony Kadavil
Remember that the passion of Christ ends always in the joy of the resurrection, so when you feel in your own heart the suffering of Christ, remember the resurrection has to come. Never let anything so fill you with sorrow as to make you forget the joy of Christ risen. - St. Mother Teresa

Technology Purchase option through Staples
As we continue the implementation of Deep Learning across the Board, and increasingly seek out opportunities to leverage digital to support learning, access to enough devices in each classroom is sometimes an issue. Our Board has been investing in technology for many years and will continue to do so, but the demand is rapidly increasing as students are starting to do more and more of their schoolwork online using the collaborative tools available.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is a strategy that has been successfully implemented in many of our schools to help support student access to technology. Many families are seeking advice as they consider purchasing a device for their child to use both at home and at school over the next few years. As a result, we have been working with Staples Canada to provide OCSB families with access to an online portal where they can find information and pricing on a few models of Chromebooks that have been specifically recommended by our Learning Technologies Department. These recommended devices are the same durable machines we are using in classrooms, with full keyboards, cameras and touchscreens that also flip over to act as a tablet and were not previously available from Staples.
Please see the parent letter outlining the program here.
Please contact the school if you have any questions.

Palm Sunday and Holy Week
Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified.
Palm Sunday is known as such because the faithful will often receive palm fronds which they use to participate in the reenactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice for people of great respect.  Palm branches are widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, hence their preferred use on Palm Sunday.  The use of a donkey instead of a horse is highly symbolic, it represents the humble arrival of someone in peace, as opposed to arriving on a steed in war. As we begin our journey through Holy Week, I wish you the opportunity for reflection and a Happy Easter next weekend.

40 Hours of Community Service
Since 1999, the Ministry of Education has required all students to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities as part of the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) (As stated in Ontario Secondary Schools, Grades 9 to 12: Program and Diploma Requirements, 1999). The purpose of the community involvement requirement is to encourage students to develop awareness and understanding of civic responsibility and of the role they can play and the contributions they can make in supporting and strengthening their communities. The Ottawa Catholic School Board has always encouraged this community service to take place in the Parish, School, or wider community. There is a list on the back of the Community Service form that all students complete that highlights many of the eligible activities that students may complete to fulfill this graduation requirement. When the expectation around community service was introduced by the Ministry of Education, they developed a list of activities that may not be chosen as community involvement activities and that are therefore ineligible activities. Included as part of that list of those expectations outlined by the Ministry is an activity “that would normally be performed for wages by a person in the workplace”. As your son/daughter works toward this graduation activity, we would encourage them to review the list of accepted activities to ensure they are meeting the proper requirements. You will find a link (below) to the All Saints community service hours form, with a list of appropriate activities on page 2. Hard copies of this form are available in our student services department.

7&8 Rethink Hate Group - Fundraising Bake Sale
On March 29th, during the ⅞ lunch, the Rethink Hate club will be hosting a bake sale with all the proceeds going towards camp Ten Oaks. Camp Ten Oaks is a volunteer driven and charitable summer camp based here in Ottawa for LGBTQ+ youth and their families. We will be selling home-baked goods such as cookies and cupcakes at a cost of around $1-$2 each.

The Rethink Hate club focuses on matters such as bullying and homophobia that take place within our All Saints and Ottawa community. Our goal is to raise awareness about said issues, locally and globally. We are student-led and have about 20 members in total. We hope that you can make it down to the bake sale to support a great cause and enjoy some delicious treats. (Chloe Fodell 8-02)

7&8 Basketball Buy-In for Charity

This Thursday marks our annual 7&8 Basketball Buy-In for Charity. This is an event that has been running for many years, and was initiated by Mr. Podgorski to support Myeloma Cancer Research at the Ottawa General Hospital. We encourage our students to contribute to the charity which allows them entrance to the basketball game where All Saints will play St. Joseph School. We appreciate our student and staff support to date and would encourage families to make use of the online donation opportunity through school cash online.

Liturgical Season of Lent
From the Diocese of Ottawa: In the Catholic faith, God often uses how humans perceive the physical world to impart something spiritual. He uses the seasons of the year to ingrain divine lessons. One such season is Lent. The liturgical cycle invites you not to just read the Scriptures, but to live them. You can experience biblical history and Jesus’ earthly life through the sacraments, sacramentals, celebrations, and times of fasting.

Lent is an opportunity for transformation, inviting us to take a closer look at our own lives and make changes that bring us closer to God. Please visit the Archdiocese of Ottawa webpage for further information

All sales will take place through school cash online. Ground and Whole bean varieties are available in medium, dark and decaf. As a huge incentive, for every bag of coffee a student sells, he/she will have his or her name placed into a draw for 2 Air Canada Tickets to anywhere in North America. Students are encouraged to purchase coffee for parents, family and friends. All coffee will be delivered to students in their homeroom classroom later in March.

All Saints Dominican Experience
In 2013, All Saints commenced supporting a one room early education center named Todo Los Santos on the Batey Margarita outside of Consuelo in the Dominican Republic. Our annual excursion to this community allows us to sponsor 30 children aged 2-5 who otherwise would not receive an education. Our students and staff arrived in the Dominican this past Saturday and will enjoy an immersion in this culture as they help support the community.

Classroom Visits - Information Sharing
At the end of January and into February, our All Saints administration visited every grade 7-12 classroom to share some common expectations, discuss the support available through our student services department, and take the time to answer student questions. Our grade 7&8 visits focused on encouraging the students around three particular areas:
  • Being respectful - of your peers, your teachers and the school environment
  • Being prepared - arriving to class on-time with all the necessary resources
  • Being focused - using technology at the appropriate times (when directed by the classroom teacher) and having personal devices off and away when not required for class activities.
Our high school discussions focused on important timelines for students (course selection, community services hours, etc.), support for mental health through our Student Services department and additional expectations including dress code. We encouraged students to share updates with parents around pick up and drop off locations before and after school. If students or parents have any additional questions regarding school expectations, we would encourage you to contact an administrator.

Girls’ Hockey - Championship Game
Many of our All Saints teams and clubs are experiencing much success in community competition. Our girls’ hockey team will play in the City Finals at 1:00pm on Feb 27. Any spectators arriving to watch the game (after school!) at Merivale Arena should be aware that there is a $3 door charge levied by the Capital Athletic Association.
